Every story is short on purpose. If something matters, it can be said in a paragraph; if it needs ten, it probably isn’t finished happening yet.Elk verhaal is bewust kort. Als iets ertoe doet, past het in een alinea; heeft het er tien nodig, dan is het waarschijnlijk nog niet klaar met gebeuren.
The tone is dry. The facts are not optional. The reactions and one-word shout-outs are yours. Use them responsibly, or at least amusingly.De toon is droog. De feiten zijn niet optioneel. De reacties en het ene woord dat je mag roepen zijn van jou. Gebruik ze verstandig, of op z’n minst grappig.
People and a machineMensen en een machine
Dwarsblik is made by people working with AI. People decide what we cover, which angle we take and how it sounds. AI helps with the heavy lifting: summarising sources, drafting, translating between Dutch and English, and suggesting the joke that is sometimes better than ours.Dwarsblik wordt gemaakt door mensen die met AI werken. Mensen bepalen welke onderwerpen we kiezen, vanuit welke hoek en op welke toon. AI helpt met het sjouwwerk: bronnen samenvatten, een eerste versie schrijven, vertalen tussen Nederlands en Engels, en af en toe een grap voorstellen die beter is dan de onze.
What AI produces is checked against sources and edited before it goes online. The responsibility stays with the editors, not with the software. “The computer wrote it” is not an excuse we accept from ourselves.Wat AI aanlevert, wordt tegen bronnen gecontroleerd en geredigeerd voordat het online gaat. De verantwoordelijkheid ligt bij de redactie, niet bij de software. “Dat heeft de computer geschreven” is geen excuus dat we van onszelf accepteren.

A lot of news is phrased so carefully that it no longer says anything. “Concerns are growing.” “Talks are continuing.” “Civilians were unintentionally affected.” We write down what happened, directly and independently, and then say out loud what grates about it.Veel nieuws is zo voorzichtig geformuleerd dat het niets meer zegt. “De zorgen nemen toe.” “De gesprekken gaan door.” “Burgers werden onbedoeld getroffen.” Wij schrijven op wat er gebeurde, direct en onafhankelijk, en zeggen daarna hardop wat eraan schuurt.

- Sharp is allowed.Scherp mag. Irony and satire are tools for commentary and clarity, not a goal in themselves.Ironie en satire zijn gereedschap voor commentaar en helderheid, geen doel op zich.
- We aim upward.We mikken omhoog. Power, policy and institutions are fair game. People are not a punchline for who they are, where they come from or what happened to them.Macht, beleid en instituties zijn het doelwit. Mensen zijn geen grap om wie ze zijn, waar ze vandaan komen of wat hun overkwam.
- Facts are not optional.Feiten zijn niet optioneel. The headline may wink; the paragraph underneath has to be right. When we get something wrong, we correct it.De kop mag knipogen; de alinea eronder moet kloppen. Zitten we ernaast, dan corrigeren we het.
- AI writes along, we sign.AI schrijft mee, wij tekenen. AI-assisted text falls under exactly the same editorial responsibility as everything else.Tekst waar AI aan meeschreef, valt onder precies dezelfde redactionele verantwoordelijkheid als al het andere.
