The war between the US and Iran is now in its eighth month, and the peace talks have reached the stage where everyone agrees on the menu but not on the order. Iran’s plan, rejected by Donald Trump last month, goes like this: stop the fighting on all fronts including Lebanon, lift the US naval blockade and oil sanctions, release frozen Iranian money, reopen the Strait of Hormuz after seven days and only then talk about nuclear issues.
Washington wants the nuclear part first. Vice President JD Vance now hints at flexibility, saying the US would accept a “meaningful” reduction in Iran’s uranium enrichment, which according to the UN nuclear watchdog has reached 60 percent. Trump says the war will end one way or another, nicely or not.
Iran’s president calls the talks futile. Both sides say they want peace.
They just want to win it first.
De oorlog tussen de VS en Iran is inmiddels in zijn achtste maand, en de vredesgesprekken zitten in de fase waarin iedereen het eens is over het menu, maar niet over de volgorde. Het Iraanse plan, vorige maand door Donald Trump afgewezen, gaat zo: stop de gevechten aan alle fronten, inclusief Libanon, hef de Amerikaanse zeeblokkade en de oliesancties op, geef bevroren Iraans geld vrij, open de Straat van Hormuz na zeven dagen en praat pas daarna over het atoomprogramma.
Washington wil het nucleaire deel juist eerst. Vicepresident JD Vance laat nu ruimte, en zegt dat de VS een ‘betekenisvolle’ verlaging van de Iraanse uraniumverrijking zouden accepteren, die volgens het VN-atoomagentschap 60 procent heeft bereikt. Trump zegt dat de oorlog hoe dan ook eindigt, op de vriendelijke manier of niet.
De Iraanse president noemt de gesprekken zinloos. Beide kanten zeggen vrede te willen.
Ze willen hem alleen eerst winnen.
