Diplomats Solve Peace by Agreeing to Schedule Another MeetingDiplomaten lossen vrede op door nog een vergadering in te plannen

The DRC and Rwanda keep meeting in Geneva under a peace deal brokered by the US; the latest round set up an October planning conferenceCongo en Rwanda blijven in Genève vergaderen over hun door de VS bemiddelde vredesakkoord; de laatste ronde plande een conferentie in oktober

Fact check first: there was no Middle East breakthrough in Geneva this weekend. But Geneva is currently hosting a masterclass in scheduling for a different conflict.

Since the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda signed a peace agreement brokered by the US in Washington in June 2025, their Joint Security Coordination Mechanism keeps meeting, including in August at the US mission in Geneva, with the US, Qatar, Togo and the African Union Commission in the room. The result of that sixth meeting: a planning conference in October that should end in a revised operations order, plus another meeting in Geneva in September.

Meanwhile the people of eastern Congo are still waiting for the paperwork to feel like peace. To be fair, meetings are how ceasefires get built.

But a peace process that mostly produces dates is basically a very expensive group chat.

OpenAI’s own forecast pointed to a $14 billion loss in 2026, yet investors put $122 billion into the company in a single roundOpenAI’s eigen prognose wees op 14 miljard dollar verlies in 2026, maar investeerders staken er in één ronde 122 miljard in

Artificial intelligence can write your thesis, your cover letter and your breakup text. What it cannot do yet is pay for itself. OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, expected to lose about $14 billion in 2026, according to internal forecasts reported in January.

In April the Wall Street Journal reported that it had missed its own internal revenue targets and fell short of its goal of a billion weekly ChatGPT users, while finance chief Sarah Friar warned that revenue growth might not keep pace with its enormous computing contracts. None of this has scared off the money: OpenAI raised $122 billion in a single funding round in March, and its stock market debut is reportedly pushed back to 2027.

That is the AI economy in one sentence.

The product is smart, the bill is huge, and investors keep covering the rent in the hope the tenant eventually lands a job.

Brussels Must First Define a Farmer Before It Decides How Much to Pay OneBrussel moet eerst een boer definiëren voordat het beslist hoeveel die krijgt

Ministers aim for a partial deal on farm policy after 2027 on 26 and 27 October; the plan folds it into national partnership plansMinisters mikken op een deelakkoord over het landbouwbeleid na 2027 op 26 en 27 oktober; het plan stopt het in nationale partnerschapsplannen

There is no new subcommittee on wheat, but there is something even more Brussels: a Special Committee on Agriculture doing technical work before ministers try to agree. The fight is about farm money from 2028.

The Commission wants to fold the Common Agricultural Policy, for decades the biggest line in the EU budget, into national and regional plans that share an €865 billion pot with other policies. Farmers fear that means less money and 27 national versions of one common policy.

Last December, police counted about 1,000 tractors and 7,300 protesters in Brussels. The Irish presidency now hopes ministers reach a partial deal on 26 and 27 October, while they are still arguing over who counts as an “active farmer”. That is the core of it.

Europe must first define a farmer before it decides how much to pay one.

The Cabinet Builds a Taskforce Before It Builds the HousesHet kabinet bouwt een taskforce voordat het de huizen bouwt

No coalition talks are paused: the Jetten cabinet is in office and has a taskforce, €287 million and a law to curb appealsEr liggen geen coalitiegesprekken stil: het kabinet Jetten zit er al en heeft een taskforce, 287 miljoen euro en een wet om bezwaren in te perken

Quick fact check: there are no paused coalition talks. The cabinet of Rob Jetten has been in office since February, and on housing it is very busy, mainly building structures that are supposed to build houses.

There is a taskforce to speed up construction in which six ministries work together, backed by €287 million to build faster and with fewer rules. The number of big building areas where housing gets priority should grow from 21 to 30.

A new law that gives the national government more control over public housing is meant to limit the endless appeals that can freeze a project for years, and the housing minister has presented a list of fifty actions against the shortage. It is a serious toolkit.

Now it needs to produce the thing you can actually live in, because nobody has ever slept in a taskforce.

Amsterdam Keeps Asking Stag Parties Nicely, Stag Parties Keep BookingAmsterdam blijft vrijgezellenfeesten vriendelijk vragen, vrijgezellenfeesten blijven boeken

Amsterdam’s Stay Away campaign has targeted young British men online since 2023; the mayor said it did not directly reduce party tourismDe Stay Away-campagne van Amsterdam richt zich sinds 2023 online op jonge Britse mannen; de burgemeester zei dat het feesttoerisme er niet direct door daalde

Amsterdam’s weapon against wild stag parties is, essentially, a targeted ad. Since March 2023 the city’s Stay Away campaign has shown warning videos to British men aged 18 to 35 who search for things like “stag party Amsterdam” or “cheap hotel Amsterdam”.

The message: fines from €140, arrest, a criminal record, a hospital bed and a wrecked body. Mayor Femke Halsema later admitted the campaign had not directly reduced the number of party tourists, and Amsterdam is still one of Europe’s favourite stag destinations.

British party organisers called it xenophobic, and one reported a jump in bookings right after the launch. The city has tightened other rules too, from a ban on smoking weed on the street in the Red Light District to limits on party boats.

Still, telling a group of lads not to come to Amsterdam is like telling a cat not to sit on your laptop.

They read it as an invitation.
