On Thursday the Financial Times reported that the ChatGPT maker told investors its annualised revenue was approaching $50 billion at the end of September, about $20 billion below the figure widely reported last month. The gap is accounting, not fraud.

Rival Anthropic counts sales made through its cloud partners in its revenue, OpenAI does not, and the bigger number had been shared to make the two easier to compare. Both methods follow the official rules.

Still, chip stocks wobbled, because the entire AI boom runs on the belief that these companies will grow into their gigantic spending plans. So the industry that sells autocomplete to the world has learned that investors autocomplete too.

Type “AI revenue” and the market fills in whatever number feels most exciting.
