Brussels Must First Define a Farmer Before It Decides How Much to Pay OneBrussel moet eerst een boer definiëren voordat het beslist hoeveel die krijgt

There is no new subcommittee on wheat, but there is something even more Brussels: a Special Committee on Agriculture doing technical work before ministers try to agree. The fight is about farm money from 2028.
The Commission wants to fold the Common Agricultural Policy, for decades the biggest line in the EU budget, into national and regional plans that share an €865 billion pot with other policies. Farmers fear that means less money and 27 national versions of one common policy.
Last December, police counted about 1,000 tractors and 7,300 protesters in Brussels. The Irish presidency now hopes ministers reach a partial deal on 26 and 27 October, while they are still arguing over who counts as an “active farmer”. That is the core of it.
Europe must first define a farmer before it decides how much to pay one.
