Supporters of María Corina Machado took to streets across Venezuela to demand her safe return and a timetable for presidential elections. Cars, motorcycles and people on foot supplied the movement that the political process had struggled to provide.
There is a bleak absurdity in having to demonstrate for a calendar: a date on which citizens may do what democracy says they are entitled to do. The authorities had their explanations. The opposition had its demands.
Between them stood people who would like the future to become something more definite than a promise delivered from an official building.
