Officially, nobody decided to live with their parents forever. Unofficially, the numbers look like a group decision. According to CBS, 518,000 people moved into a home of their own for the first time in 2024, down from 560,000 the year before.

The drop was steepest among under 25s leaving the parental home: 96,000, against 125,000 a year earlier. Among people aged 25 to 35, the number still living with their parents grew by 5.6 percent, while that age group as a whole grew by only 1.7 percent.

People in their twenties and thirties, in other words, are not choosing family time; they simply cannot find a front door of their own. The government calls the housing shortage one of the country’s biggest challenges. Your mum calls it lovely.

Your back, after another year in a single bed, calls it something we cannot print.
