Europe’s gas tanks are going into winter emptier than usual, and Brussels would like you to stay calm about it. On Thursday the Commission’s Gas Coordination Group said storage is below historical levels but that the system is flexible enough to get through the winter, mainly by importing more liquefied gas by ship.
Storage stood at roughly 73 percent in early October, about ten points lower than a year earlier, while the war around Iran has pushed gas prices up. The think tank IEEFA warns the EU may need to cut gas use by 7 percent this winter, or spend about €3 billion on extra imports instead.
And from 1 January 2027, Russian liquefied gas is banned entirely. So the plan is solid, assuming a mild winter, calm seas and nobody touching the thermostat. Pack a jumper.
It remains the most reliable instrument of European energy policy.
