Europe Packs for the Climate Summit and Leaves Its Wallet at HomeEuropa pakt zijn koffer voor de klimaattop en laat de portemonnee thuis

Ahead of COP31 in Antalya, a draft EU position sees “no scope” for extra climate finance pledges and leans on energy securityVoor COP31 in Antalya ziet een concept van het EU-standpunt ‘geen ruimte’ voor extra klimaatgeld en zet het in op energiezekerheid

The next UN climate summit, COP31, opens on 9 November in Antalya, Türkiye, and Europe is already doing its homework. Draft EU positions seen by journalists say current national climate plans are not enough to keep warming at 1.5°C and urge big emitters to act with “the highest possible ambition”. Encouraging.

The same draft also says there is “no scope” for extra climate finance pledges at the summit, and EU finance ministers were due to confirm their money position on Friday. The new selling point is energy security: with gas prices pushed up by the war around Iran, Brussels argues that solar panels and wind turbines do not need a strait to stay open.

That is a genuinely good argument.

It would just land better with a cheque attached, because poorer countries cannot pay for wind farms with conclusions.
