Michelle Bachelet withdrew from the contest to become the next UN secretary-general after her bid struggled to attract support. The former Chilean president had offered multilateralism and international law, qualities the vacancy ostensibly required.

At the United Nations, however, qualifications and acceptability must first negotiate with one another. The Security Council's permanent members possess an unusually direct recruitment tool: the ability to make a candidate disappear from consideration. Bachelet said her international work would continue.

The institution continued searching for somebody able to represent the world without excessively inconveniencing its most powerful inhabitants.

Michelle Bachelet trok zich terug uit de strijd om de volgende secretaris-generaal van de VN te worden, nadat haar kandidatuur weinig steun kreeg. De voormalige Chileense president bood multilateralisme en internationaal recht, eigenschappen die de vacature ogenschijnlijk vroeg.

Bij de Verenigde Naties moeten kwalificaties en aanvaardbaarheid echter eerst met elkaar onderhandelen. De permanente leden van de Veiligheidsraad hebben een ongewoon direct wervingsinstrument: ze kunnen een kandidaat uit beeld laten verdwijnen. Bachelet zei dat haar internationale werk doorgaat.

De instelling zocht verder naar iemand die de wereld kan vertegenwoordigen zonder de machtigste bewoners al te zeer te hinderen.
