AI Still Cannot Make Coffee, but It Can Make Your Electricity PricierAI kan nog steeds geen koffie zetten, maar wel je stroom duurder maken

Fifty billion dollars? Cute. Amazon, Microsoft, Google and Meta are expected to spend somewhere between $650 and $725 billion on AI infrastructure this year; Alphabet alone has guided up to $185 billion.

All those data centres need power, and a report by US senators Elizabeth Warren, Richard Blumenthal and Chris Van Hollen, first revealed by Time, says Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft and three data centre companies all reject the standard that they should pay for the grid upgrades their buildings require. The senators say that pushes the bill onto ordinary households.

In Louisiana, one estimate puts the extra cost for the average Entergy customer at $8 to $13 a month; Meta disputes that its project is to blame. So the robots are not making your coffee yet.

They are, however, making the electricity for your coffee more expensive.

Vijftig miljard dollar? Schattig.
