Iran’s chief negotiator says Hormuz stays closed until the US accepts Tehran’s plan to reopen it within seven daysIrans hoofdonderhandelaar zegt dat Hormuz dicht blijft tot de VS het Iraanse plan voor heropening binnen zeven dagen accepteren

Two days after G7 leaders formally called for full freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, Iran replied in the least diplomatic format available: no. On Sunday, parliament speaker and chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said the strait will stay closed until Washington accepts Tehran’s plan to reopen it within seven days, built on seven conditions.

Iran, he said, will both fight and negotiate. Foreign minister Abbas Araghchi added that Iran prefers diplomacy but is better prepared if the US attacks again. Donald Trump rejected that same plan within hours last week, and the American naval blockade of Iranian ports continues.

In normal times about a fifth of the world’s oil and gas sails through this narrow strait, and it has been largely blocked for more than seven months. Statements are easy to sign.

Tankers need something sturdier than paper.

Silicon Valley promised that AI would take over the boring jobs. The layoff statistics suggest it is mostly taking the blame.

US outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas counted 116,175 job cuts that employers attributed to AI in the first eight months of 2026, about 22 percent of all announced cuts and more than double the total for the whole of 2025. Here is the twist: overall announced layoffs actually fell by 41 percent in the same period.

And the AI figures are what companies say, not what anyone measured. Some firms cut staff to free up money for data centres; others find that “AI” simply sounds better to investors than “we hired too many people”. For starters and creatives it is still scary, because junior work is exactly what the bots imitate best.

Just remember: when a company blames the robot, the robot was not in the meeting.

Europe Agrees on 90 Percent for 2040, Then Argues About Your Petrol in 2028Europa wordt het eens over 90 procent in 2040 en ruziet dan over je benzine in 2028

The EU’s carbon price on heating and road fuels was pushed to 2028; ten countries asked to reconsider it, six others back itDe Europese CO₂-prijs op verwarming en brandstof voor het wegverkeer is uitgesteld tot 2028; tien landen willen hem heroverwegen, zes andere steunen hem

Brussels did not solve climate change with three new subcommittees this week, but it is quietly fighting over the bit of climate policy you will actually notice: a carbon price on petrol, diesel and heating fuel. The new emissions trading system for buildings and road transport, known as ETS2, was meant to start in 2027.

As part of the deal on the 2040 climate target it was pushed to 2028, with a brake that releases extra allowances if the price rises above €45 a tonne. Environmental groups say the delay alone costs around €50 billion in revenue.

In July, ten countries including Italy, Poland and Greece asked to reconsider the whole system; at the end of September, six others publicly backed it. Europe has signed up to a 90 percent cut by 2040. Now it is arguing about whether filling up should cost a bit more in 2028. Ambition is easy.

Invoices are hard.

Ambitie is makkelijk.

Facturen zijn lastig.

Deutsche Bahn Hits 52 Percent, Which Counts as On Time If You SquintDeutsche Bahn haalt 52 procent, en dat is op tijd als je je ogen dichtknijpt

Only 52.4% of Deutsche Bahn’s intercity stops were on time in September; the 60% target for 2026 is slipping out of reachSlechts 52,4% van de stops van de Duitse intercitytreinen was in september op tijd; het doel van 60% voor 2026 raakt buiten bereik

Deutsche Bahn has a generous definition of on time: arriving less than six minutes late. Even by that standard, only 52.4 percent of stops by its ICE and IC trains were on time in September, one of the weakest months of the year. Regional trains did much better, at 88.2 percent.

Chief executive Evelyn Palla wanted 60 percent for the whole of 2026. To get there, the intercity trains would now need around 70 percent every month until December, a level they have not reached in a long while.

Fact check on prices: classic intercity fares and BahnCard prices stayed stable this year, while the Deutschlandticket for local transport went up to €63 a month in January. So the expensive part is mostly your time.

Every German train journey is now an adventure, with the timetable attached as a loose suggestion.

Dutch Student Rooms Now Cost €46 per Square Metre, Broom Not IncludedStudentenkamers kosten nu 46 euro per vierkante meter, bezem niet inbegrepen

No, a broom closet in Amsterdam has not been rented out for the price of a French chateau. The real numbers are wild enough. Rental platform Kamernet found that the median student room in 17 Dutch cities cost €660 a month in the first quarter of 2026, up 3 percent from a year earlier.

Per square metre that is €46, which means a room of about 14 square metres, roughly the size of a parking space. In Amsterdam, prices at least stopped climbing at the end of 2025, which landlords will no doubt present as an act of generosity.

These figures only cover rooms advertised on the platform, not the ones that quietly go to a friend of a friend. Meanwhile the cabinet promises 100,000 new homes a year. Until they show up, your room is not small.

It is “compact”, “efficient” and “close to everything”, including all four of its walls at once.
